How to create WordPress Galleries in Posts or Pages

July 13, 2015 by Stephen Narwold

Simple photo galleries can be created in posts or on your Photos page without using a complicated photos plugin. This applies whether or you have the NextCellent Gallery plugin installed or not. Here’s how.

Instructions Using the Gutenberg editor

There are fewer steps if you’re using the Gutenberg “Block Editor.”

  1. Click on the “Add Block” button in the top-left corner of the edit post or edit page screen (a circle with a plus in it), and select a “Gallery” block
  2. Use steps 3-7 in the classic editor instructions below
  3. Instead of adjusting the gallery settings before inserting the gallery, you’ll go ahead and click the blue “Insert Gallery” button, then look to the right column of the block editor (click the gear icon in the top right if you don’t have a right column) and the block settings will appear there. It’s recommended to use 2 or 3 columns, and “media file” as the “Link To” option.

Instructions using the Classic Editor

For this example, we’ll edit our Photos page and insert a gallery there. The same process can be used for inserting a gallery in a post. If you have any questions about creating galleries, please email blog_support@ntm.org and include a link if you are asking about work that has already been started.

1. One the Page or Post is located and opened using the left dashboard menu, you can place your cursor where you want to insert the new photo gallery and click on “Add Media.”

2. Once “Add Media” is clicked, choose “Create Gallery” from the left sidebar.

3. Once you have clicked on “Create Gallery” you can choose multiple photos that you have already uploaded to your Media Library by clicking on them or choose the “Upload Photos” tab.

4. When you select photos, check marks will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the photo thumbnail. To deselect a photo, click it again and the check mark will go away. (If you are uploading photos, go to the next step.)

5. If you are uploading photos, after you have clicked on the “Upload Photos” tab, open a window with the photos you want to insert and drag and drop them onto the “Drop files anywhere” area to upload them. You can select multiple photo to drop at once. Once the photos have been uploaded they will appear in your “Media Library” and will already be selected with a check mark in the upper right-hand corner.

6. Once the photos are selected that you want to add to your new Photo Gallery, click on “Create a new gallery” in the lower right corner of your screen.

7. Before inserting the gallery you can rearrange the photos and add captions to individual photos.

8. Before inserting the gallery you can adjust the “Gallery Settings” to control how your gallery will appear in a post. It is recommended that you use “Media File” as the “Link to” option.

For photo galleries with 9 or fewer photos it would be recommended to use 2 Columns and set the size to Medium.  For larger galleries you may want to use more columns and smaller photos. (Having too many large photos to open on a page at once will increase the time it takes for the page to open.)

Once you have edited the “Gallery Settings” you can click “Insert gallery” in the lower right-hand corner of the page.

9. Once the photo gallery is inserted onto a Post or Page, you can click on the photo gallery and Edit (pencil) or Delete (X) options will appear at the top of the gallery.

10. To give your photo gallery a title on the page, place your cursor above the photo gallery and type your title. You can then select the text and choose a style such as “Heading 2” to make your title stand out on the page. (never use Heading 1)

11. You can then “Publish” your new photo gallery by using “Publish” in the top right sidebar of the page or post you are editing. (If you are editing a Page or Post that is already been published the option will be “Update.”

You can then view the gallery on your site and the results should look something like this.
