Email notifications of my new blog posts are not being sent. How do I fix this?

January 12, 2018 by Stephen Narwold

There are several reasons that your subscribers may not receive the email notifications for your new posts. There are three, however, that are easy to diagnose and fix.

  1. When you make a post, there is a check box (you usually need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to find it) that will disable “Subscribe2” notifications. Make sure that box is unchecked
  2. From your dashboard, hover your mouse over “Subscribe2” in the left sidebar, then choose “Settings” from the popup menu. The first setting is labeled “Restrict the number of recipients per email to (0 for unlimited):”. If it’s set to 0 or higher than 45, click on “Edit”, enter 45, and click on “Update”. Then scroll down to the bottom of the settings page and click “Save”. Don’t worry, if you have more than 45 subscribers, they will still all receive their notifications. This setting just forces the system to send multiple batches of emails, rather than one email addressed to all your subscribers.
  3. Post By Email. There is a compatibility issue between the plugin that sends out our post notifications (Subscribe2), and the one that handles posting via email. If you post via email, you will need to do one of two things:
    1. Set “Send Emails” to a timed event (less reliable): From your dashboard, hover your mouse over “Subscribe2” in the left sidebar, then choose “Settings” from the popup menu. Find the “Send Emails” setting and set it to anything except “For Each Post.” This method is not as reliable as the next one.
    2. Use MailChimp to send out your blog post notifications. MailChimp is in the business of sending emails, and is able to do the job much better than we ever will. Check out our “Sending Post Notifications Via MailChimp” article to learn more.

If none of those changes fix the problem, feel free to send an email to blog_support@ntm.org and someone will help you diagnose the problem.
