How do I add Links to my blog sidebar?

April 22, 2013 by Stephen Narwold

This tutorial will show you how to add a “Links” box to your blog’s sidebar. This is useful for adding more ways for your supporters to connect with you, such as Facebook or other social media platforms.
Setting up Links
  1. From your dashboard, click on “Links” in the left sidebar
  2. You will now see a list of your links (or an empty list if you haven’t set any up yet)
  3. To add a new link, click on “Add New” under “Links” in the left sidebar
  4. Enter the information for your link
    1. The “Name” of the link is the clickable text you want to appear in the links widget (like “Find us on Facebook”)
    2. “Web Address” is the URL you want the link to go to (likeĀ http://www.facebook.com/yourpage)
    3. The “Description” is the text that will pop up when someone hovers their mouse over the link (like “Check out our Facebook page”)
    4. “Categories” is where you can differentiate types of links for the purpose of having them appear in different links widgets (ie. “Connect with us,” “Our Churches,” etc.)
  5. Click the blue “Add Link” button on the top right side of the screen
  6. Repeat for each link you want to add.
  7. To edit existing links, click on “Links” in the left sidebar, and click on the link you wish to edit. (Don’t forget to click “Update Link” after you’re done making changes)

Add the “Links” widget to the blog sidebar

  1. From your dashboard click on “widgets” under “Appearance” in the left sidebar
  2. Find the “Links” widget in the center area, and click and drag it into the area labeled “Sidebar 1”
  3. From the options, you’ll be able to choose which category to show links from (or just choose “All Links” do display every link regardless of the categories assigned to it) and whether or not to show link images, names, descriptions and ratings.
    1. I recommend showing only Link Names (the description will still show up when someone hovers their mouse over the link.)
    2. If you select a category instead of “All links,” the name of the category will appear as the title of the links box on your blog (otherwise, the title will simply be “Links”)
  4. Click the blue “Save” button at the bottom of the “Links” box.
