What happened to the Editor???

December 21, 2018 by Stephen Narwold

We have just upgraded to WordPress 5.0, which comes with a new Post and Page editor called “Gutenberg” (It’s also referred to as the “Block Editor”).

It is the default editor now on our blog, and I encourage you to get familiar with it. Here is a good beginner’s article on the new editor, and you can find many more by searching for “Gutenberg Editor Tutorial” on your favorite search engine.

But can I please turn it off?

Yes! If you must, you can avoid using this editor altogether. WordPress has told us they will support the old editor at least until 2022, so you definitely have some time to make the transition.

Here are some ways to use the old editor

  1. Just make the old editor the default. To do this, find “Settings” in the left menu, and open the “Writing” sub-tab. Find “Default Editor for all users,” set it to “Classic,” and click “Save Changes”
  2. Choose the classic editor when editing a post or page. From the “All Posts” or “All Pages” screen in your admin area, hover over the post or page you want to edit, and use the “Classic Editor” link instead of the “Block Editor” one
  3. Switch editors once you’ve already opened the post or page for editing. Once you’re in the Gutenberg editor, look in the right column (if uoi don’t have one, click the gear icon at the top right to open it), make sure you’re in the “Document” tab (as opposed to the “Block” tab), and scroll down to find “Editor.” Under that header, click the “Switch to Classic Editor” link.
  4. Use the new editor anyways. WordPress has made it clear that the Gutenberg editor is the future of their editing experience. I’m sure they won’t support the old way forever. And, really, the new editor is not all that scary. Once you give it a chance, it will grow on you. So even if you prefer the old one, try the new one from time-to-time, and your effort will pay off in the long-run
